One of the questions that I get asked about the materials I use in my jewelry is, “What is that stone? “ My most frequent answer is that the stone is glass. I love using glass for so many reasons. The primary reason, of course, is that it is extremely beautiful and unique. I also love it for it’s sustainability and ethicality.

Glass is a sustainable material. That is mostly eco-friendly. it’s production typically requires less energy and generates fewer pollutants than other materials, making it a more eco-conscious option.

Because I use all cold connections, the environmental impact of creating Casa Kira jewelry is relatively low compared to traditional methods and materials.

The majority of the glass beads that I use are made in small, cottage industry, family owned factories. They are fairly traded and ethically produced.

  The primary raw materials for glass—sand, soda ash, and limestone—are abundant and widely available. This reduces the environmental strain associated with resource extraction and minimizes the ecological footprint of the production process.

Glass, known for its durability, can withstand the test of time. When used in jewelry, it provides longevity. This durability promotes a more sustainable approach to fashion, discouraging the disposable culture often associated with trendy accessories.

Over the almost two decades that I have been making jewelry, I have developed relationships with my bead sellers have and gotten to know them and their stories. Often I am buying directly from the artist themselves, (which is one reason that my work is so affordable.)

The production of glass beads typically involves fewer toxic substances than some other materials. This contributes to a safer working environment for artisans and reduces the potential negative impacts on ecosystems associated with the jewelry-making process.
